Final Evaluation

New Elizabethans has been a journey that I have really enjoyed. Throughout this journey I have faced many challenges and learned from them. Looking into Elizabethan history really amazed me as to the deeper I dug, I would always discover something new about the Era. After looking at the historical approach and moving onto the contemporary research, I discovered how they could be linked historically.

Developing my research further, I went onto looking for inspiration for my lady in waiting designs. After carrying out all the research I was really inspired from the fact there was so much information out there in the world and I had no idea that it even existed.

My final design looked a little complicated as I felt like there was too much going on and that it would be too much work to do for the time limit we were given. As my partner and I had fantastic communication between each other, we practiced quite a lot before getting to the final assessment. Due to this I had trial and errors in my design, which I then changed for the benefit of my partner and my design.

Working to my partners design was quite frightening for me, as I wanted my partner to be satisfied and happy with the outcome. I did have a slight panic during the final timed assessment and have also learned a lesson from it.  Looking at the overall brief I would say there were a few parts where I fell due to my mistakes, however I picked myself up by learning from them.

3 Brush Make-Up Challenge

Health&Safety
  • Carry out a consultation to make sure the model has no contra-indications and is not allergic to ant products.
  • Make sure all products are displayed appropriately on the working area.
  • Make sure model's hair is tied up and is covered with a cape.
  • Wash hands before and after.

List of Products and Tools

  • Foundation Brush,
  • Small and Medium sized square shaped precision brushes
  • Foundation,
  • Translucent Powder, puff
  • Supra Colors

For the three brush make up challenge I used the image on the left hand side as my inspiration to re-create. As we had less people in the class that day, instead of not doing anything I chose to work on myself. This look is really hard to create specially getting all the lines to a precised thickness and making sure they are straight.

As we only had to use three brushes, I use a foundation brush to apply the base two precision brushes that had a flat square end to it. One small sized and medium sized brush. We were given the permission of using a puff which we cold use when setting the foundation. After applying the base, I set it with powder. I then used the the
precision brushes to create the look. As I was short of time I could only create the eye bit and not the rest.

This was also very difficult to do on myself and I know it also would have been difficult to do on someone else. Even though I knew this look would be a challenge to create, I still went ahead with it as I enjoy doing things that would challenge me.

I enjoy working this way as in the future if I do come across something like this at least I know that I attempted to try do it in the past and it shouldn't be much of a challenge.
When I was creating this design as I was looking at myself in the mirror, I was having a difficulty with making sure the lines were straight. After  I did the look I thought the lines were pretty much straight, however when I looked at the image I noticed that the green line that is on the forehead has a slight curvature to it.

I used supra colors to create this look as I thought that they would be the easiest to work with. After I completed it I also thought of going over the individual colors with the krayolin eye shadows as this would pop the colors out and made them more bold as well as set the base in place.

I was happy that I attempted to re-create this design as I found it difficult and I also understood how to do it for the next time. Having a steady hand to create this is really important as the lines do go wobbly. As this was a three brush make-up challenge I just had to use the three brushes, however in the future I could also use a stencil for this type of design.

In The Role Of The Designer/Assessor

Peer Assessing
Looking at Sophie's overall performance I graded her in the upper second level between B1 and B3. This is because I thought that working with Sophie was a pleasure. The communication we both had between each other was fantastic and that is what has enabled us to have three practice sessions before the final timed assessment.

Having these practice sessions was a plus point as we changed quite a few things that were beneficial for both Sophie and I before we got to the timed assessment.
During the timed assessment I like how organised Sophie was with everything and she knew what she was doing in the sense that what step comes after the other.

Another thing I liked about Sophie on the day of the timed assessment was the fact that she kept up with all the health and safety rules. Coming onto the design I was really pleased with the outcome of my design that Sophie created.I was happy with the outcome of the look. However, I think that even though she uses her own initiative at some things like she did with the brush strokes on my neck, she kind of struggled with the lips as she overdrew them quite a bit.

She always said that she is so bad with lips, In my opinion Sophie has many skills and all she needs is a little more practice with precise things like lips. She started of doing them well, but as she saw the shape was uneven in some places she overdrew the shape on the other side. This is not a major problem however. with my look I wanted the lips to be subtle and not the center of attraction of the whole look.

At the last practice session we applied mascara to the lashes before applying the gold, this gave the lashes a more voluminous look and the gold stood out more. I would have liked the lashes to have a more bold look for the final assessment as well.
Looking at the images overall, I am pleased with the job Sophie did and how she handled different situations.  I believe that Sophie has a lot of potential and looking at our communication, the effort she put in and the outcome of the final assessment is the reason I graded Sophie a B2.

These are the pictures from the final timed assessment, in which Sophie created my design on me. I was really pleased with what Sophie did on the day as in the practice sessions we have had so far we always ran out of time.

However, as in our last practice session we organised the order in which Sophie would create my design. With the help of this Sophie finished everything in time and I was pleased about this as my design did not rush her for timing and she was able to do the neck design as I wanted that to be part of my design as it was the main piece in the design as well as the lace over the eyebrows.

As Sophie could use the lace as a stencil over the brows and use it to map out the shape, I was quite happy with the outcome of the shape over the brows. Going on to the lips I wasn't really pleased with the lips as Sophie really over drew them as she kept correcting the shape. I would have liked them as mt natural lip shape because looking at the picture now the lips stand out more to me than the other features on the face. I just would have preferred them to my natural lip shape. On the other hand I really liked the brush strokes that Sophie created on my neck using the gold paint.

I did want a messy look at the bottom of it and what she did I think was brilliant. This is where she used her own initiative to create an amazing effect with the brush strokes. I also liked the contour that she did and where she placed it on both sides of the face as looking at the pictures it looks really even on both sides. As I wanted the glow look in the skin as my lady in waiting, I brought in a gold elf eye shadow which Sophie placed over my cheek bones. I was really happy with the effect as in the pictures it is visible although I would have liked it a little more bold.

With the eyes I wanted a messy winged eyeliner and I liked the look of it at the end. While Sophie was doing it on the day, I thought to myself that it was too thick, but looking at the images you can really see the messy smokey effect and that is what I wanted. I would have preferred the lashes to be a little more gold and a little more bold as well.
In all looking at the final look I think Sophie did a great job and also completing everything in the given time limit.

Practical- Sophie Practising My Design

Health&Safety

  • Mascara, Disposable Mascara Wands, Illamasqua Black Eye Shadow
  • Duo Lash Glue, Lace.

This was  Sophie's third trial practicing my design. We used all the products that were we used in the previous practice session. Sophie started with applying the base, she then moved onto painting the gold over the eyebrows. She moved onto the cheeks did the liner over the eyes, lashes and then moved onto the lips.

Just doing this took Sophie an hour and ten minutes. This way she doesn't get the neck painted in gold and the lace going over the neck. I feel like this is a crucial part of the look as it reflects the design over the eyebrows and I also wanted it to be a part of my design as it represents a high collar.

To make things slightly easier for Sophie I curt out the shape of the lace exactly how I would want it in the final assessment and asked her to use it as a stencil to draw out the shape as it will be less time consuming and easier to match up the shape.

I made the lace more round from the side and wanted it to merge in with my hair line so that it just doesn't look stuck on. I also advised Sophie to stick the lace on top of the eyebrows as soon as the gold dries as this will give the duo glue time to dry and get clear.

As we were having time issues we decided to paint on the neck after just to see how much time it takes to paint it and stick the lace on. This literally took Sophie two minutes to do. We then both decided to prioritise the things I would like in the design and do them in an order. We wrote down a list which stated the order in which to create the design. This was the order:

  • Base
  • Design over brows
  • Lips
  • Neck
These were the main things I wanted to be in the final look as they heavily represented my lady in waiting. After Sophie will have completed these if we still have time I would then like her to contour the cheeks, line the eyes with liner, put the god over the lips and paint the lashes gold.

However, if we do not have enough time on the day of the final assessment I told Sophie she could leave out the lashes and the gold over the lips. Looking at the design I was pleased with what Sophie did and she also felt a little more at ease with how we ordered the steps in creating the look.

In The Role Of The Make Up Artist

Being in the role of the make up artist, from the final timed assessment I learned a very big lesson that is time keeping. As I stated in my previous blog post about the final timed assessment, as I powdered the white strip that goes across the face some of  it came of at the bottom at the right side.
I lost much time as I was trying to rectify this and as a result of this I had to rush everything else.

Looking at Sophie's design, I think it was an amazing design and she even thought about the design in cutting a few things out if they will not fit n the timed period.
She did opt out from sticking on the bottom lashes as we had no time for that in the practice sessions. I and Sophie worked really well together and what I liked about Sophie is that she was always willing to come meet up for practice sessions and our communication about the design was really good too. Working on another persons design was a challenge for me as the designer already has an image of what their design has to look like and so did Sophie.

I wanted to give it my best so that Sophie would be happy with the outcome of her design. However, I wasn't pleased with myself on the outcome for the final timed assessment as I know I could have done much better. I will remember this as a lesson learnt for any future assessments.
