Procedure
- For the base I used white supra color. I used this as a base as it would be easy enough to blend other colors on top of it as it is a grease based product.
- I did not go round the eyes with the white base as the white color underneath will kind of dilute the color I put on the top.
- On the lids I used a turquoise color in the inner corners of the eyes and I used a dark purple color on the outer corners of the eyes. I brought the purple into the crease of the eyes and blended it in. I used eye shadows to create this.
- For the purple circle round the eyes I used supra color again. I feel that I should have set that bit using powder as it slightly creased under the eyes.
- I then drew petal like shapes on the outer parts of the circles. I used a round brush to do this and almost just pressed my brush against the skin to get that shape. I then outlined these with the turquoise color. I also used supra color for this. Looking at the eyes I think I could have used a darker outline on the petals as this would have made them stand out.
- I used black supra color to create the web on the forehead. I feel that I should have shaded the bottom parts of the web as this would have made it have a more realistic look. I also used black supra color to create the nose.
- To create the illusion of a jaw line, I drew a line from the corners of the mouth to the cheek bones. I then blended the line in and shaded the bottom of the line to give it a sunken in effect. For the teeth I also used black supra color. Looking at the teeth now they just look like drawn on lines. I could have shaded in between the teeth and used a little white as well as this would make them pop.
- I drew small round petal like designs on the cheeks as this brought a sweet look to the face as it is a sugar skull.
- I drew leaf like petals on the chin. I wasn't very pleased with how this looked. I could have used a darker shade of the color as it just looks faded as it is.
- Overall, I really enjoyed creating my version of a sugar skull and also learnt that shading is a key technique in making features appear a little realistic.
