Practical- Halloween Sugar Skull

This is the sugar skull I created on my partner. As only one of us could create this look in class due to shortage of time. I met up with my partner at her flat to create my version of the day of the dead, sugar skull makeup.

Health and Safety
  • Make sure my partners/models clothing is covered using a gown.
  • Do not double dip spatulas into the make-up palettes.
  • Always wash hand before application and after.
  • Always carry out a consultation before starting to make sure there are no contra-indications and my partner is not allergic to any products.
  • Always ask partner/model if they are wearing contact lenses.
  • Always provide partner/model with after care advice.

List of Products and Tools
  • Cleanser,Toner, Moisturizer
  • Cotton pads, Cotton buds, Couch Roll
  • Supra Color Palette
  • Translucent Powder, Powder Puff
  • Foundation Brush, Small Rounded Brush
  • Shadow Blending Brush Angled Brush Small Precision Brush
  • Kabuki Brush, Stippling Brush
  • Spatula's
  • Eye Shadow Palette

Procedure
  • For the base I used white supra color. I used this as a base as it would be easy enough to blend other colors on top of it as it is a grease based product.
  • I did not go round the eyes with the white base as the white color underneath will kind of dilute the color I put on the top.
  • On the lids I used a turquoise color in the inner corners of the eyes and I used a dark purple color on the outer corners of the eyes. I brought the purple into the crease of the eyes and blended it in. I used eye shadows to create this.
  • For the purple circle round the eyes I used supra color again. I feel that I should have set that bit using powder as it slightly creased under the eyes.
  • I then drew petal like shapes on the outer parts of the circles. I used a round brush to do this and almost just pressed my brush against the skin to get that shape. I then outlined these with the turquoise color. I also used supra color for this. Looking at the eyes I think I could have used a darker outline on the petals as this would have made them stand out.
  • I used black supra color to create the web on the forehead. I  feel that I should have shaded the bottom parts of the web as this would have made it have a more realistic look. I also used black supra color to create the nose.
  • To create the illusion of a jaw line, I drew a line from the corners of the mouth to the cheek bones. I then blended the line in and shaded the bottom of the line to give it a sunken in effect. For the teeth I also used black supra color. Looking at the teeth now they just look like drawn on lines. I could have shaded in between the teeth and used a little white as well as this would make them pop.
  • I drew small round petal like designs on the cheeks as this brought a sweet look to the face as it is a sugar skull.
  • I drew leaf like petals on the chin. I wasn't very pleased with how this looked. I could have used a darker shade of the color as it just looks faded as it is.
  • Overall, I really enjoyed creating my version of a sugar skull and also learnt that shading is a key technique in making features appear a little realistic.
